Save with Load Management

Load management is an approach by which the peak demand of electric energy can be curtailed to allow better use of existing generating capacity. Lowering the peak benefits all members by reducing our wholesale power cost. These savings are passed along to participating members through special incentive rates. New systems may also be eligible for installation rebates.

Electric Thermal Storage (Off-Peak)

Electric thermal storage (ETS) heating systems use off-peak energy by storing enough heat during the night, when demand for energy is low, to heat the home throughout the day. The classic law of supply and demand applied to electric utilities results in much lower electric rates during the night, and we pass this savings on to our members through a special off-peak rate.

The off-peak rate is presently 5.23¢ per kilowatt-hour, which is less than the general service rate of 9.97¢ per kilowatt-hour.

Although the original purchase price of ETS home heating systems may be higher than many conventional heating systems, ETS produces substantial savings due to lower energy and maintenance costs over the life of the equipment.

A variety of common systems include underfoor electric heating cable or hydronic tubing, individual room units, and central storage forced-air or hydronic furnaces.

High Efficiency Storage Water Heating

Itasca-Mantrap’s storage water heating program is available for members who install a water heater with a total combined capacity of at least 100 gallons. The water heater must be separately metered and controlled.

The water heater(s) on this program are supplied with energy during Itasca-Mantrap’s off-peak hours, typically from 11p.m. to 7a.m., and need to store enough hot water during that time to provide you hot water for the remainder of the day.

Please remember all households have differing hot water needs, so you must size your water heater according to your specific needs.

Members who participate in the storage water heating program receive a reduced rate on the kilowatt-hours (kWh) used by their water heater(s). The rate received depends on what load management program you choose to participate in. If you participate in the dual fuel program, your rate will be 6.77¢ per kWh, and in the off-peak program, 5.23¢ per kWh.

*Combined capacity includes a combination of more than one water heater or the addition of a mixing valve to a large capacity water heater. Verify application with us before installation.

Peak Shave Water Heating

Itasca-Mantrap’s peak shave water heating program is available for members who have or install a water heater with a capacity of at least 50 gallons, and is separately metered and controlled.

The Peak Shave water heating program is designed to reduce demand on the electrical system on days of high demand and high wholesale energy prices ultimately helping to keep energy rates low. Water heaters enrolled on this program can be controlled for up to 8 hours on peak days. Water heaters must have sufficient storage capacity to supply hot water over a peak period.

Please remember all households have differing hot water needs, so you must size your water heater according to your specific needs.

Members who participate in the peak shave water heating program receive a reduced rate of 6.77¢ on the kilowatt-hours (kWh) used by their water heater.

Dual Fuel

Dual fuel is a program that uses electric heat as the primary heating source and a fully-automated, thermostatically controlled backup heating source during peak demand periods. The energy rate for Dual Fuel applications is 6.77¢ per kWh.

Common systems include an electric plenum heater and a propane forced air furnace, electric boilers with a fossil fuel backup system, or baseboard heaters with an automated non-electric backup system. For the comfort of an all-electric system, Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) units can serve as the backup or primary system.

Dual Fuel systems can be controlled up to 400 hours per heating season and for extended periods. It is essential that your backup system is able to adequately heat your home during these times.

Air Source Heat Pump

Air source heat pump (ASHP) systems can both heat and cool your home with the same unit, using refrigeration technology to transfer heat. The refrigeration system consists of a compressor and two coils made of copper tubing.  In the winter, the unit extracts the heat from outside, down to an average of twenty degrees Fahrenheit, and transfers it into your home. In the summer, the process is reversed and the unit removes heat from your home and releases it outdoors.

ASHPs on Itasca-Mantrap’s load management program must be separately metered and controlled. The heat pump will be cycled on and off in 15-minute intervals during peak demand periods in the summer. By allowing us to occasionally cycle the equipment, the kilowatt-hours used by your heat pump will be billed at a reduced rate.

*You must use a participating contractor to install the unit to qualify for a rebate. Rebate applications are available only through participating contractors.

Ground Source Heat Pump

Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems use the constant temperature of the earth to transfer heat to and from your home. This allows the system to reach efficiencies up to 300 to 500 percent.

In the heating mode, GSHP systems transfer heat via a vertical or horizontal loop system installed in the ground. Heat energy is carried into the home through piping connected to a heat exchange unit inside the home. In the summer this process is reversed to transfer heat from the home into the ground.

GSHP system can be placed on either the general service or Dual Fuel rate. If placed on the Dual Fuel service, the system, including any supplemental strip heat, must be controlled and the member must have a fully-automated backup system able to meet the home’s heating needs during control periods.
