Grill Outside, Chill Inside: Easy Ways to Save Energy This Summer
Summer and grilling go hand in hand—and not just because it tastes amazing. Cooking outside can help you cut down on your energy bill by keeping the heat out of your house. When your kitchen stays cool your AC doesn’t have to work as hard. That’s a win for your comfort and your wallet.
At Itasca-Mantrap, we love sharing simple ways to save energy, and grilling outdoors is one way to make difference.
Here are a few tips to help you grill smart and stay safe this summer:
Set Up in a Safe Spot
Set up your grill at least 10 feet from your home, deck railings, and tree branches. Choose a level spot that’s away from foot traffic and never use a grill in an enclosed area like a garage.
Stay Close and Pay Attention
Never leave a grill unattended, and make sure children and pets stay at least three feet away. Accidents can happen fast so keep a close eye while you cook.
Check Your Equipment
If you’re using a gas grill, inspect the hose and connections before you light it. Use an even mix of water and dish soap and apply to the hose and connections. If you see bubbles, you have a gas leak. And always open the lid before lighting to avoid a buildup of gas.
Be Careful with Charcoal
Only use starter fluid made for charcoal grills and never add fluid to an open flame. After you’re done, let coals cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container. Make sure that all fluids and materials are safely put away out of reach from the children.
Clean Regularly
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), dirty grills are one of the top causes of grill fires. While some folks say a “seasoned” grill adds flavor, skipping regular cleanings can be risky—and it can affect how well your grill works, too.
Here’s how to keep things safe:
- Always let your grill cool completely before cleaning or storing it.
- Clean all parts of the grill—grates, burners, grease traps, and side shelves—to help prevent grease fires.
- Check the owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations.
