As temperatures drop, a little preparation now can make a big difference later. At Itasca-Mantrap Electric Cooperative, we want our members to stay safe, warm and connected all winter long.
🏠 Prepare Your Home
-
Seal in the warmth: Add weather stripping, insulation and storm windows. Insulate any pipes along exterior walls to prevent freezing.
-
Check your heating system: Have it serviced before the first big chill and test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
-
Backup plan: Keep a safe alternate heat source and fuel ready in case of a power outage.
🚗 Prepare Your Vehicle
-
Winterize early: Check antifreeze levels, tires and wipers. Keep your gas tank full to help prevent fuel line freeze-ups.
-
Emergency kit: Include a blanket, flashlight, snacks and charger in case you get stranded.
⚡ Be Ready for Outages
Severe weather can bring unexpected power interruptions.
-
Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy.
-
Store water and non-perishable food.
-
Charge phones and power banks ahead of a storm.
-
If the forecast looks rough, avoid unnecessary travel.
☠️ Stay Carbon Monoxide Safe
-
Never use grills, camp stoves or generators indoors or in garages.
-
Place generators at least 20 feet away from windows or doors.
-
If your CO alarm sounds, get outside immediately and call 911.
We work year-round to keep your power reliable but preparation at home helps everyone weather winter safely.
